Child Support
During a divorce, spouses may not agree on much – but both can openly agree that they want what is best for their children. That said, it’s not an easy process. Without an experienced attorney to guide you through each step, the result can be far from what you expect.
How Does Child Support Work in Illinois?
In Illinois, the requirements for child support are fairly straightforward: if one parent has a child for more than 146 nights per year, that parent will receive child support from the other parent.
This means that one or both parents could end up paying child support.
If one parent has the children for more than 219 nights per year, that parent will receive child support.
If, on the other hand, both parents have the children for at least 146 nights per year, each will receive child support from the other parent for the number of nights they have the child.
There are other guidelines in place, and unless the court finds a good reason not to follow them, they will be adhered to.
However…
While child support may be fairly straightforward (at least as far as divorce law goes), it’s closely tied to your child custody agreement and child custody agreement can be very complex. Without an experienced lawyer by your side, you may end up missing details or making legal mistakes that could cost you valuable parenting time with your child and the ability to help make decisions for their welfare.
Before you enter into any sort of agreement regarding the support or custody of your children, please talk with an attorney who focuses on these types of matters. It really can make all the difference in the outcome – and in your children’s futures.
